We are very excited about the hotels we have selected this year as the host hotels. They are as interesting and diverse as the sights we will see during the trip. The hotels range from restored Victorian, to old Southwest, to mid-50s classic, to ultra-modern. Alternative hotels are also listed. The host hotels were selected for their value (highly rated by Trip Advisor and below average cost) and location (walking distance to downtown restaurants, shopping, etc.). Group drive arrival and departure each day will be to/from the host hotel (except for Wednesday morning – which will be detailed in the final Itinerary to be sent later). If you stay elsewhere, make sure you are at the departure site each morning in time for the daily driver meeting.
We are traveling in a peak tourist season (first weeks kids are in school, Fall colors, nice temperatures) so rooms are in high demand. There are plenty of rooms but people plan their trips to this region far in advance so make your reservations for the entire route NOW because rooms are filling fast, particularly in Santa Fe where most other hotels require a 2 night stay. Most of the hotels offering a special TT West rate will end their offer on April 30.
Colorado Springs/Manitou Springs, Colorado – Saturday & Sunday Nights September 7 & 8, 2019
There is no host hotel in Colorado Springs since drives on Sunday and Monday will depart from Audi Colorado Springs. Two hotels are suggested based on different types of hotels that might interest you. Hotels in downtown Colorado Springs are expensive. We are suggesting two that are in the western Colorado Springs and eastern Manitou Springs area. Both are a short and easy drive to Audi Colorado Springs.
The first is the Mel Haven Lodge, 3715 West Colorado Avenue in Colorado Springs, phone 800-762-5832. This is a classic 50s motel that has been well maintained over the years. Many of the rooms have a kitchenette. Rooms start at about $80.
The second is ¼ mile further west crossing the city limit to Manitou Springs. The modern Magnuson Grand Pikes Peak is at 45 Manitou Avenue phone 719-685-5455. Rooms start at about $120 (AAA, AARP, etc) which includes a continental breakfast.
Crested Butte, Colorado – Monday Night September 9, 2019
The host hotel in Crested Butte is the Old Town Inn, 708 6’th Street, phone 844-483-2954. This hotel is only a few blocks from Elk Avenue, the primary street of Old Town. Rooms are $149 if you call and ask for the TT West rate which includes a deluxe continental breakfast. Note the hotel, as most hotels in Crested Butte, has a gravel parking lot.
Durango, Colorado – Tuesday September 10, 2019
We are very pleased to have negotiated for the Victorian era Strater Hotel at 699 Main Avenue which is the primary road in the historic Old Town district of Durango. Each room is furnished in Victorian era antiques. Its Diamond Belle Saloon is a friendly Gay 90s piano bar where we can relax after the day’s drive. Call 800-247-4431 and ask for the TT West rate to get a discount with prices starting at $177. Parking in a nearby gravel parking lot is free. Parking in the adjacent paved lot is $12 a night. You can make your choice at check-in.
For those on a budget, we suggest the Durango Downtown Inn, a former Holiday Inn. This is a nice property that is adjacent to our departure Wednesday morning from the Albertsons parking lot and a 5 minute walk to the Strater and Main Avenue. Located at 800 Camino Del Rio, prices are about $115 (AAA, AARP, etc), phone is 970-247-5393. It has paved parking. Ask for the rear rooms with a river view.
Taos, New Mexico – Wednesday and Thursday Nights September 11 & 12, 2019
The host hotel is Casa Benavides Inn a historic southwestern motel where all rooms are furnished in the classic southwestern Spanish motif. It is located at 137 Kitt Carson Road in Old Town and is very convenient location for starting our Thursday and Friday drives. If you phone 575-758-1772 and ask for the TT West, AAA, AARP, etc rate then rooms start at about $115 for a queen room. This includes a deluxe continental breakfast and afternoon snacks. Note this hotel, as most hotels in Old Town Taos, has a gravel parking lot.
A nearby similar alternative classic Southwest motel is The Historic Taos Inn at 125 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, 844-852-5277 with rooms starting at about $130. This hotel is also in Old Town and has a gravel parking lot.
Santa Fe, New Mexico – Friday Night September 13, 2019
The host hotel is the modern Hilton Santa Fe Historic Plaza at 100 Sandoval Street in Old Town. We were able to get the best rate, by far, you will find for a one night stay in Old Town of $209 a night. Most hotels require a 2 night stay. Click here to get this rate, fill in the number of rooms and guest and click on “Continue”. Don’t click or fill in anything else. Several room types are offered but it is first come, first served and some room types may sell out. Or you can call 505-988-2811 and ask for the “Auto Group TT West” rate. We also got a reduced parking rate of $15 a night. The farewell dinner will also be held in the Ortiz restaurant in the Hilton.
